When I stop for three seconds after being a petulant brat about the issue, I do realize that. The Boys' voices are not only much closer in range, they are within that pleasant Tenor range pop music audiences fawn over so much. I've heard *NSYNC describe their own as a "round sound" because in addition to Justin's first and JC's second tenor, there were Chris and Lance at either end and Joey in a lovely little versatile position where he can go high or low. They claim he's a baritone, we have our doubts. So yes, logically, I do realize why things are as they are, but it doesn't change the fact that three out of a five-member group are so limited in their participation.
And every time Lance rolls his eyes and laughs off any solo effort as "no bass singers have solo albums" I just want to take him by the arms and gently sit him down in a chair to listen to some Barry White. Honestly, if anything he did wouldn't be colored by the pall of public opinion as far as pop music, I think he could make quite the remarkable, acclaimed solo effort.
