Apparently, this entry is being brought to you by the finest of all sibilants, the letter 'S' as in Squeee!
So, rolled out of bed at 3:22 p.m. after going to sleep at 10:20 a.m. (aah, neurotic sleep patters, welcome back). Determined that the two adorably domestic drabbles I scribbled last night are actually worthy of daylight, so they'll be typed and posted at some point. Read a bit. Played (and won, two on first try, two on second) games of different mah jonggs before remembering that, oh, right, concert tonight.
Matchbox 20 with Sugar Ray as the opening act at the Office Depot Center. Hm, I think. Self, is there anything else I want to be doing tonight? Can I dress and be there in 45 minutes?
And it turned out that, yes, I could.
But before that, I happened to breeze through the kitchen and spotted a small beige manilla envelope with my name on a Joey/Lance address label and foreign postage stamps on it. I wasn't expecting mail, so I took it back to my room and opened it between finding flip-flops and styling my hair.
slimslash rocks something harcore. As if she knew of my deep and abiding love for them (making and appreciating), there is now glitter all over my bedspread and three soundtracks to three of the most rockin' stories in this fandom. With pretty, pretty artwork and a lovely note and I was such the happy puddle of fangirl. All I could do on the drive to the arena was snicker helplessly at the idea of Aerosmith's Just Push Play playing through the credits of the story with the same title. Because recontextualization is fun, yo. *mwah*
The show: To be completely honest, I went (very) mostly for Sugar Ray. And dude, Mark McGrath is *so* my boyfriend. Wonderful set of hits and cool banter in-between. Really fun to see how much the (very mixed-age) crowd got into it, too. He has a great voice, and I like that their songs, while alt/surfer rock, are melodic - Chasing You being especially demonstrative of both's virtues.
American Hi-Fi also played, and they did an open Meet & Greet after their set. Nicest, most adorably tousled group of boys ever. I want to describe their music as sort of Rock Emo - it's like, yeah, shit happens to us, but fuck you, which is really cool. Edgy with an element of pop, even. I liked them. They have a new CD, now prettily autographed by all four.
After Sugar Ray did their reworked rendition of Fly, there was at least a half-hour delay. Then the drummer for Matchbox 20, Adam, came onstage and proceeded to go into way too much detail about how Rob Thomas woke up this morning with next to no voice and has been enduring steroid injections to open up his throat for the past three hours, but that ultimately they're sincerely sorry about having to cancel their first show (out of over a thousand in eight years) tonight. He later called in to Y100 and mentioned that Rob's been coming down with something and has been hoarse for a few days, but when they were doing rehearsals earlier in the afternoon he just barely had voice enough to speak with, much less sing. And they're supposed to have a show tomorrow night in Orlando. Poor kid. Best wishes.
However, there is now warmed Buca DiBeppo tortellini and Sprite Remix (because I am nothing if not a marketer's wet dream - I don't even drink soda!) And another JC song clip. I might be having a Week. *g*
Randomly, how much does it charm me that Johnny Depp went to Disneyland (repeatedly) to ride Pirates of the Caribbean as "research" for the movie? A whole heck of a lot.
To close on the theme, Steven Spielberg made me cry. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch A.I. without it breaking my heart just a little.
[Ed. Note: To Challenge and Striptified kids: As far as venue security, it's a joke. They barely rifle through your bag, and they don't even run a wand over you. Also, even though digital photography was prohibited at the venue, the security people were more than happy to take them for you and your friends with the American Hi-Fi boys. So bring on the bootlegging technology for Justin and Challenge!]
[Ed. Note the Second: Catastrophaay! A catastrophaay, I tell you! Yeah, it's official, I am utterly at the mercy of JC's voice, penchant for unnecessary glides and all.]
