Thing is, up until about a year ago I only watched MTV for the rare music video and watched little television in general during Senior year of high school, then Freshman year of college. The only shows I've ever watched religiously were The X-Files (though only Season Three through Season Six) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (ditto, though Season Seven was a casualty Bumfuck, FL programming rather than waned interest). I watched Smallville when I got hooked on it and made a point to see the entire first season, but then had a class conflict with its airtime and that was pretty much that.

Many things have changed in the past year. And today, MTV had a Real World marathon plus that Uncensored or what have you special. Damn, but if it isn't morbidly fascinating. Paris is a fucking genius locale, too, especially with our small town boy Ace trying to make it out alive and knowing as little French as possible.

But more than all that, the appeal is definitely there, and I think very much akin to what draws fans of RPS, the fact that, yeah, it is to some extent formulaic and scripted, and you do only get to see what They want you to see, but there are honest moments in there; it's real kids really living their lives for those four/five months. It's an interesting approach to character study, because where a fictional character may do something that's perceived as out of character, which can alienate thoser who rightfully call its creator on it, you get multiple perspectives on these kids, including their own. There is buildup, there is logic, there is the sense of their own control, and they change, then do it right in front of you. From a writer's standpoint, it's an interesting experience in broadening one's perspective.

Real World marathons are addicting, yo. I remember spending a whole day watching one once. Just couldn't tear my eyes away from the monitor. Then again, with the lack of tv watching these days, even commercials have that effect on me :-)

And, in amusing news, I just learned that if you *really* wanted to see PotC for free, we could always drive up to Orlando and see it at Downtown Disney if I flash my ID. I think that might be going a bit out of the way to get a bargain, though ;-)

Thing is, I'd actually be up for a road trip :) But we have no time, like, at all. Which is all good and yay, because it means we have plans! Or you know, things to do anyway. We said shopping and dinner on Thursday as well as POtC and hanging with Alicia on Friday, right? Then Saturday we'll probably be sleeping in and checking out the Bass Museum (heh ;) and then Skills on the Beach. Then we'll see how we can amuse ourselves (it *is* South Beach after all) for something under $250, though not necessarily alcohol-free because whee! And Sunday we check out, drive back, drop stuff at my place, lunch at the Oasis, then Challenge at 3:30, then whatever and however we please afterward. Monday we said Seaquarium, right? I'm willing if you're still in for the manatees. I'm just thinking out loud here, all of this is flexible and I'm running into a couple of other people on Wednesday at least, so maybe something there, but we'll definitely have grand funs. Err, or something more grammatically correct.

Yeah, totally no time for the road trip. Which is okay, since I'll just book a winter package at the resort instead ;-) Don't twist my arm or anything...

Somewhere in there, I have to get my hair cut, too. If I go through with it. And yeah, Seaquarium and manatees sound good :-) Otherwise, I'm good with just having a list of things to do and stuffing them in as time permits, with priorities mostly for meeting new and interesting people. Fun!

Okay, on the ID front... P says she's getting the replacement Tuesday so we can conceivably get her to overnight the old one to Florida or something. Also, I'm talking to a guy at work who has a friend who could help if that doesn't pan, though it'll cost about $50... possibly. I'll follow up tomorrow for sure. It's getting close to Friday and I really hope something turns up soon, because I'm not sure what we'll do otherwise. Agh.

If it does cost $50, I'd be willing to pay it, so let him know if that's what we're doing. I just don't want to have to worry about getting in. Stupid regulations. The hell kind of arbitrary number is 21, anyhow?

*calms down*

I just finished talking to him and he gave me the address of some place in East LA and told me to basically go to the corner and talk to some of the guys loafing around who speak predominantly Spanish, maybe wave some money. And to not go alone or after dark ;-) It sounded vaguely shifty. I think I'll wait on P tomorrow, and see if she can FedEx her ID, since that sounds... well, safer ;-) So I'll know by tomorrow what our course of action will be. The tickets auctioned off... for ony $53 + shipping, but I suppose that's better than nothing. Once again, *so* sorry about how that turned out. I'll have her PayPal to you and then send along mailing instructions.
