"I sometimes read [TWoP] and I think we're doing Kiss of the Spider Woman."
-Al Gough, writer and co-creator of Smallville.

other highlights:
"I love [TWoP], by the way. I think [Omar's] synopses of the shows are hysterical. I was talking to the president of Warners television, relaying to him that I surf the websites after episodes, and telling him about [TWoP]. ::chuckles:: They're very funny and you have very good nicknames. I like "Boobs McChesty." That's my favorite."
-Al Gough

-Woohoo! one time for Omar the FABulous! ;) and yes, that one was my favorite on first read as well.

OG: I was going to ask. Is she coming back?
AG: She's done. If she comes back, she's dying.

-something slow, nasty, and completely unphasing to Lex unless it sends Clark running? we can only hope.

"The other idea was [in creating the concept for the show], what if Lex and Clark had been friends when they were younger? Out of that that incredible friendship grew this mythology. It was an interesting place to go. It's a story we've seen celebrated in story and in song [apparently, there was a musical, to which i can only add, LOL]."
-Al Gough

"I was going to ask about music. Will we see Lex Luthor do a song-and-dance number anytime soon?" -Omar G.

-and that, ladies and gents, is why we love this grand recapper of ours. because he asks the pressing questions. (the answer, sadly, was not in the foreseeable future). FYI, we're following more movie instead of comic book continuity. which cuts down on the amount of pertinent information my research has to encompass by so much, i feel like i could kiss this man.

"How slowly will Lex's move to the dark side unfold? Will we ever see a truly evil Lex on Smallville?"
-Omar G.

-OT: does George Lucas get a quarter every time someone cites the 'dark side' in the newsmedia? wouldn't put it past the man.

"It'll be a long, slow evolution with many twists and turns in the road. The fun is watching sort of this progression. If you turn him evil too early, the character becomes less interesting. We want to play it slowly. We want to watch the twists and the turns."
-Al Gough

-::giggle:: they like to watch too. i need a life. ;)

"There's been a lot of discussion of this on our message boards from nearly all of our readers. On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the most, exactly how homoerotic is the relationship between Lex Luthor and Clark Kent?"
-Omar G.

-more love for Omar. he can just do all the industry interviews from now on. ballsy too, asking this so early on. good thing Al Gough has a good sense of humor about it:

"You're talking to two guys who made their careers on buddy movies. Buddy cop movies are love stories with two guys who carry guns. It's really not supposed to be homoerotic at all. [Laughs.] I sometimes read your site and I think we're doing Kiss of the Spider Woman. It is genuine friendship. It has taken on a life of its own. We don't sit down and try to find the Gayest Scene of the Episodes."

-of course you don't - you SCRIPT them! or you know, just let Rosenbaum and Welling make their own fun. either way, i place the blame squarely on you, you ingenious liberal! "confound it all, i love it though"...

"Yet, it comes out."
-Omar G.

-i.love.this.man.

"We tend to focus on the relationship elements of the show." -Al Gough

-and that's the thing about this show: it is all.about.the characters. which is why we're here after all. god knows the plots don't keep it in the Nielsen Top Twenty.

Omar G: "Obviously, Lana and Clark don't end up together. How do you keep that relationship from stagnating, since we all know it's not meant to be?"

Al Gough: "We'll try to keep those triangles interesting. Sometimes that involves introducing a love interest down the way."

Omar G: "But not Lex."

Al Gough: [Laughs] "But not Lex. No." [More laughs]

-had to include it. made me smile too wide not to. and on that note, keeping this in because i myself have wondered:

Omar G: "What was Michael Rosenbaum's audition like?"

Al Gough: "It was really...it was interesting. He was the last one cast. We'd seen him earlier on in the process. He was sick that day, and wasn't feeling well. When he came back in toward the end, the casting director had a video camera set up. It's amazing how adept they are at how to use this thing. They set it up and asked him to stay in one place, but Michael said, "I'm gonna move around, shake your hand." He moved around the room. It was great to sort of watch this audition tape when you see him. It was the scene from the pilot with the car keys and him asking Clark if he thought a man could fly. He really nailed the scene. We saw the charisma and charm and sense of danger the character has there. That's when we knew we'd found our Lex Luthor. It was the toughest role to cast. It's great when you find an actor inhabit a role and make it so. It's been fun to watch and certainly nice with Lex and his relationships."

On Rogue: "It was interesting to introduce Metropolis, and also the idea that somebody without superpowers could really hold Clark's feet to the fire. It showed us that there are a lot of other stories to tell."
-Al Gough

-indeed. Superman is a lot more interesting like this, at least to me, when he's still vulnerable, has real ties to the world, and regular schmoes can hold those things over his head.

and finally, the poll, which made me laugh loud enough to attract housewide interest:

What else should Omar have asked in his interview?

1. Can I have a lock of Michael Rosenbaum's hair?

that was the one. or maybe i'm just too easily amused.

2. Why doesn't Clark fly if he's so super?
(it's been laid down as one of the rules of the show: no tights, no flying.)

3. Will Jackie Chan do a cameo?

4. Can you cast me as a LexBitch?
(they should hold contests for these parts. or maybe EBay auctions. obscene i tell you, things would get obscene faster than you could say 'no interest in anyone but Clark, but oh to be the window dressing on that stately manor!'

5. When's that big 7th Heaven crossover gonna happen?
(::cringe::) now Gilmore Girls, that could have potential.

#4 is winning by a landslide. color me new shades of completely unsurprised. ;) speaking of which, you should check out the dream entry from last night,...
