even in the midst of recounting some grand love story, Xiao manages to interrupt herself for the huge Smallville ad they've placed alongside Interstate 595 to express her devotion and add that, oh yes, Clark is a hottie. we mused and chatted (my influence spreads far and wide apparently, she heard about it from Harvard Girl, and we all know how that began), and i must say it took some formidable control to restrain myself until the drive back, upon which opportunity i seized to play a mildly clever little game with her adorably unsuspecting little head.

J: "So Xiao, what do you think of the show?"
X: "It's good, I mean I like it and all. But we all know how it ends, and there's this dangerous, evil something between the two of them that's threatening to just conflagrate any second." (i'm not clever enough to make this stuff up, folks.)
J: (barely suppressing frame-shaking giggles) "But what about the Clark and Lex of right now, in the context of Smallville?
X: "You mean that they might be gay."

and it wasn't even a question. this was all paraphrased, as what followed was a mild version of body/mind shock on my part that the sheltered, haplessly oblivious, wholesome girl in the seat next to me just blurted out the unmentionable subtext of a WB (read: all-american, apple-cheeked, immaculately-coiffed, white-bread goodness and marketability) show. it was all i could do not to reach right across the gear shift and parking brake to give her a huge hug. if Xiao can see it, i can think of no stronger cause for vindication.
