Yes Battleships. Think of the Missouri in the US nave. Big ships with huge guns. Until DS9 I've never seen any mention of smaller vessels (think destroyers or escorts) in Starfleet. Nor any mention of fleets. Every ship has the firepower of s fleet in itself, much like the Tirpitz and the Bismark on WWII.
