If I don't occasionally cut my losses with updating, it's like nothing happened this year besides work, and that's not how I want to remember it.

That is the opening line of an entry I began typing sometime late November. It involved exhaltations about this television season (Pushing Daisies! Journeyman! Chuck! Kid Nation!), seeking SGA fic from Sheppard's point of view, the food and family dramas of the holidays, and speculation about the far-off prospect of a job at an unnamed start-up newspaper in the Middle East.

We've come a long way, baby.

In short: Brandon and I accepted job offers from Emirates Media Inc. to be on the staff of a British publication in Abu Dhabi (I needed the map, too. For photos of the city, see here.) About three weeks later, after cautions that were we to cohabitate as an unwed couple the authorities may well come around to say something about it and a heartfelt confession in the middle of Warcraft by Brandon that he would "totally courthouse marry" me, we did it properly in the backyard of his family's St. Petersburg home.

With bonus best in-laws ever!

By the way, if you ever want to wreak some havoc? Walk into a bridal shop on a Saturday saying you need a dress for your Monday wedding.

Despite blissful unemployment since the 10th, I've been too busy packing and traveling all over the state to catch my breath, let alone update (though I do mean for that to change, one way or another.) More than that, my head's been clogged with uncertainty and, to be honest, a little worry. But our coworkers seem cool, the most recent DVD seasons of all our shows have been purchased, and the region abounds with all my favorite ethnic foods. This is pretty much all we know about the paper too, and while I'm optimistic that the project will be progressive - the crown prince has certainly made a significant gesture by giving the publication independence - even if it only turns out to be a working vacation it'll be an amazing experience.

Uh, I think that's it. What's new with you?

:) Thank you! With [ profile] walkingshadow and alone, I went to "a lot" of dress stores, bridal and not. But that dress in a pink-cream color on another girl made me gasp.

The saleswoman there told us it was a 14-week preorder, and B. and I had found another dress at her shop that I didn't hate (man, those dresses can be HIDEOUS), but we had one more store to check. We found the dress, in white, only in my size AND on sale at a small bridal shop that was the closest to my apartment to begin with. FATE, YO.

Brandon knows this, but I did marry him just a little bit for his family. I love my tattered, awkward brood, but his is so refreshingly normal.

Woman! Congratulations and best wishes on the new husband and the new job. Boy, you sure don't do things by half, do you? I hope you enjoy your new surroundings, and you MUST post to keep us up to date on you.

Heh, I suppose not. Although you guys must be ecstatic at the prospect of hearing about something else other than my sucky job and Lakeland malaise. Except the weather will be about 20 degrees warmer on average and the apartments that the company is securing for us all are completely unfurnished - as in, no stove or refrigerator. New drama!

Congratulations! And having been in more than one bridal shop, my deepest and most sincere admiration for getting that dress out of them--not only is it lovely, it's perfect for you.

:D It was the only one in my size, and at the last dress shop [ profile] walkingshadow and I had time to hit up with any hope of a seamstress making a bustle within the deadline. It's not easy to find a good dress these days! We saw some truly hideous numbers - I was seeing lace and flower beading and oceans of silk for days.

The entry makes it seem like it all happened in a rush, which it did, but there was a bit of lead-up to all the elements. A friend of mine has been working in Saudi Arabia for almost a year and heard rumors about the project; Brandon and I had discussed "a married life" in passing. So it wouldn't have been a leap if I had done my proper journaling duties. :P But a new camera has been purchased, and as soon as I know what Etisalat does and doesn't block, there will be redemption!

It's a minor miracle, how that dress came to be. I wasn't even going to buy a proper dress - no real time to shop, plus the wedding was originally supposed to be just a courthouse affair - but then my mom freaked out. So I spent a couple days wandering malls and shops with no success, then a friend came into town and we scoured some more across three counties. Then I saw that dress in a coral color on another girl in a bridal shop and inhaled way too loudly. We found it at the last shop of the day, about 20 minutes before closing time, in white and only in my size, and ON SALE. No woman should ever take heart in my story because stuff like that DOES NOT HAPPEN. o.O

I read this once through. And I kept scrolling. Then I stopped, and went, "Wait--huh?!?! Dubai? Married?!?!"

You're gonna have the best grandma stories. ;)

"Oh, you don't want to hear that boring old saw again about how your grandfather and I planned a flawless wedding in two days and lit out for Dubai a month later."

Which is to say, congratulations, and all good luck on the many adventures you've got ahead of you!

Abu Dhabi, actually, is a sister city to Dubai. They're both in the United Arab Emirates, but in different states. Abu Dhabi is the richest city in the world, though Dubai does eclipse it in development, but they're working on that. It's a friendly rivalry.

Yeah, writing it gave me a bit of whiplash. But there was actually three weeks of planning and (initially reluctant) dress shopping. He proposed just before Thanksgiving, and we got married on Dec. 17. It feels like a lot less time than that though, whatwith it originally being a courthouse wedding that morphed into (thanks moms!) a full-on affair. We're having a proper ceremony (not to mention honeymoon, Brandon knows our imminent working vacation doesn't count!) when we get back for our entire families and many many friends, but this was a wonderful, quiet little arrangement.

Hehehe. I hope we'll be good enough parents to bore children for generations!

This is the most fabulous news! You are going to have such a great time - speaking as an ex-expat, it is not always easy but often awesome. What a place to be in the world, working on a newspaper, right now. Congratulations on your job and your wedding.
