Don't let it- aaw, too late.

I'm with Damon on being underwhelmed by Elijah's plan, which depended on the loyalty, and proficiency, of witches 500 years ago. There would have been no way to test the elixir since Katherine and Elena are both supernatural beings, so who knows if it would work - since we know the charmed rings don't. Letting Elena die is a bad start to any plan, and Stefan's justification that he trusts Elena because she trusted him would be one thing, except now she also trusts Elijah, who once loved Katherine enough to find a way to save her but now renounces the emotion, which is thoroughly infuriating.

Which brings us, once again, to the theme of this season of love. What is it? A willingness to sacrifice? Trust? Putting the other person's needs above your own? If it's all of those things, then every single person who's claimed to love anyone else falls short. What about when things get tough? Is love fighting for what you want, or is it respecting the other person's wishes no matter what?

I bet Stefan is grateful that Damon fed Elena his blood. Because if love is anything, it's the willingness to do whatever it takes to keep the other person happy and safe. Why was Damon "of all people willing to take that choice away from her?" Because of his selfishness, for sure. But also because, as he tells her, she'll get over the lifetime of misery she may initially wish on him because he's ensured she gets to live. Elena talks about wanting to grow up, have a family, get old - you can't do those things when you're dead either, and at least eternity gives you the chance to experience some of them.

Speaking of unnecessary death, why punish Elena and Alaric, two people who have done everything he's asked, by turning Jenna? (By the way, who is she meant to feed on to complete the transition? Were there human spectators invited to this secret supernatural ritual a millennium in the making?) Damn it, I liked Alaric and Jenna together. Alaric deserved to have at least a little of the normal, boring human life he's always wanted, as everyone else walks around forever dragging their supernatural baggage behind them.

In the middle of all the doom (ugh, Damon's werewolf bite situation needs to be resolved before the season finale or ELSE), there were a couple of things to be happy about here. I LOVED Damon's reaction to Klaus's threat at the Grill that he not "do anything you'll regret." And his blackmailing Katherine with the thought of an immortal Elena competing for Stefan's affection? NUGH. Damon doesn't need to compel people to manipulate them.

Meanwhile, I'm going to reread some happy threesome fic until my Strongbow cider is done to steel myself against the misery sure to be piled high in 2.21.
