May. 30th, 2002 03:16 amhow much do i want to have already between them? nothing before 'Hourglass' could justify the strength of Lex's emotion here. so we'll start with that. many thanks to Harvard Girl and Miranda for their contributions:
06. Hourglass:
Catalysts:
-conversation over Porsche - more blatant, unhesitant lying, basically telling Lex that he imagined what he saw, what probably haunts his dreams
Issues:
-i have no intention of dealing with the Cassandra, which could leave the story lacking. i need this to be about Lex and Clark, period
-not enough time to let things simmer. Lex is -very- upset here, something time only helps justify in its compounding.
07. Craving:
Catalysts:
-Clark once again apologizes after Lex recounts owing his baldness to the meteor shower, a story he says he reserves for people whose ass he'd like to get better acquainted with. it's between the lines, people. watch the scene and tell me it doesn't make you blush
-Lex hires Dr. Hamilton to begin research on the ins and outs of meteor rocks
Issues:
-Pete has valiantly stood up to take Lex's ass-kicking this episode
-Clark actually manages to keep his mouth shut AND avoid being seen using his powers by anyone. amazing. an anomaly of an episode if i've ever seen one.
08. Jitters:
Catalysts:
-Clark saves his life yet again, twice if you look at things properly, and maybe somewhere in his heart Lex did have a death wish walking into that plant, so there's anger at having his life saved again, -and- having his plans foiled by this snot-nosed freshman of a pesky farmboy with a "messiah complex"
-the adrenaline excuse for being able to hoist two grown men from a falling platform, an obvious lie if Clark's ever told one. though i lend this a bit more believability than most people
-anger that Clark would just walk in there and risk his own life for a situation that was Lex's fault and problem
Issues:
-but really, how much can you resent someone or the actions which led to their -saving your life-
09. Rogue:
Catalysts:
-Clark refused Lex's help yet -again-, even in a situation that Lex knew better than the back of his own hand and knew how to make disappear
-Clark wouldn't say what Phelan had on him, more secrets (the stopping of the city bus, the generator, Phelan's manipulations, etc.) with Lex having proof of -something- on that video camera, and who knows what sort of other footage from the trophy case camera
Issues:
-Lex is put in the dark corners spotlight as well, which means this would be more of a tit-for-tat than a tete-a-tete
-Clark doesn't actually lie to Lex in this, as we see no conversation in which Lex voices his doubts or suspicions about the tape. however, he does know that whatever Phelan had on Clark was big enough to get the boy to commit a string of serious felonies...
10. Shimmer:
Catalysts:
-more rescuing of a trussed-up Lex by Clark. nifty that he missed the mallot shattering spectacularly on Clark's chest... can i just say i have no love for convenience as a plot device?
-mostly innocuous lie about living on a farm and being able to find needles in haystacks to sidestep Lex's part bloodhound comment
Issues:
-Clark was almost compensatingly out for Lex's best interests in this episode, telling him about finding Victoria in his office, then rescuing her from the bathtub
11. Hug:
Catalysts:
-it's Lex's turn to fall all over himself to help Clark, first warning about Hypno!Krypto!Handshake guy then siccing his lawyers on dismantling the contract signing over the Kent farm
-Lex offers shelter to Clark and has Kyle treated. we giggle and wink knowingly when the doctor looks between them at Lex's 'your money's on my desk' after he inquires Clark about how he plans on paying for his services. like i said, Lex must have decided to pay off some of that karmic debt he's lugging around this week. or maybe he had Miss Chleo consult our dearly departed Cassandra and was actually treated to his future bad-ass under the influence self attempting to make Swiss cheese out of poor Clarkbar. either way, he's being too charming to dwell on such notions right now.
-Clark says Lex is the only one he could trust (with harboring a fugitive, but we know blanket statements when we see them). this should've warmed Lex a bit, but mostly, it probably pissed him off.
-maybe we could do something with the Atticus reference, but it's been too long since 'To Kill a Mockingbird' for me, too
-and now, friendship as fairy tales and castles, respect and fear are your best hopecakes, the banes of living in a small town, and Lex holding possibly the most phallic of all objects, an uzi. which he proceeds to empty at Clark, who sends him flying just as things were about to get any uglier, which i, cringing behind drawn-up legs and peeking between finger slits didn't think could happen. ouch. just ouch.
-and of course, Lex doesn't remember, and the overgrown Boy Scout's singing Belle and Sebastian about it.
Issues:
-Lex's nagging mind about the absent hours and what he could've been doing. he's not taking my advice about the wallowing.
-Clark puts a lid on it all, which is more noble than i can possibly endure and will therefore move right along.
-actually, a note: while Chloe did nothing anyone had to twist her arm for, it must've taken a lot out of even Rickman to get Bo Kent to sign away the farm. which begs the question of whether Clark ever actually took Lex's words in the garage to heart...
12. Leech:
Catalysts:
-we first see the simulation compiled by (albeit shady, like Nixon) expensive experts of the Porsche plowing into Clark and off the bridge. takes the evidence to Clark, who once again lies about the incident. Lex professes that Clark's the closest thing he's had to a real friend and that Clark doesn't have to hide anything. nasty exchange about hammer-whipping follows. Clark wimps out with a comment about played the good Samaritan not being enough. no, Clark, most people aren't as Zen about just being alive after something that should've, by all reason, left them singing alto soprano in the skies with a major wardrobe shift.
-interesting stepping-off point: Clark is hurt and Lex gets serious doubts; then Clark is suddenly all better again. yet more strangeness, secrets, and lies.
Issues:
-Lex backs off here. officially announces the closing of the file and the Kents being off-limits to Nixon. whether he personally abides by his actions is another matter, though he's been as good as his word up until now.
13. Kinetic:
-the only reason Lex is still alive and not breathing through a tube courtesy of his father right now is because Clark destroyed that disk. Lex is still kissing ass for this one. he wouldn't risk rocking the boat now, when he himself has so much to lose by revealing the truth. which makes everything afterwards tainted too. up until now, Lex's secrets didn't involve directly lying to Clark, only vague allusions and lies by omission. 'Kinetic' changed that.
i am done, kids. more ruminations on Lex, just how much Clark means to him versus his secrets and if that will be enough for him to look the other way, whether a relationship is even possible while Clark's secrets remain, er, closeted, and just -what- is going on inside that lickable head of Lex's regarding your favorite moping superhero and mine to come. err, follow. don't even bother with the fork, i am done.
