This is amusing now. It wasn't when I fled in dire panic and made that frantic phone call, huddled in the restaurant bathroom, to Miranda.

"You said you liked to read short stories. What kind of stories? What happens in them, what do you like to read about?"

And no, the operative answers don't even reside in the same geographic hemisphere to the truth when it's your father asking the questions.

Ooops. *hugs* Though I can't really relate since I had my mother proof-read a few of my stories, and she blushed so much, she told my father, and I just laughed my ass off. Then again, I'm 28, so that was kind of my way to tell them to fuck off and leave me alone about what I like to do in my spare time. Didn't really work... but they did get over it.

I fought bravely not to blush and melt right into the floor right there and then. My father has no clue and couldn't handle it if he even thought I read, much less wrote and loved "that sort of thing." I've watched Queer as Folk with my mum, but I don't think anyone immediately related to me would be okay with it. That's the closest it's come though, and wow, it was scary for a moment.

Don't I know it. Yeah, pretty scary stuff. And see, if we were having the conversation in English, I'm sure I could've spun pretty elaborations about slice of life narratives and the struggles of the human spirit, etc. where nothing I said would've resembled the keywords 'men' and 'sex.' Taboo is my bitch game, I'm telling you. But in Hungarian? I'm not as eloquent with it as I once was, ergo much stammering and hemming and hawing and it ended up that by the time I got back to the table, they were onto the impending war with Iraq, so the day was mine.

*shudder* Yeah, okay, maybe it's not entirely funny yet.
