Hoping that somehow the sum of its parts would make the whole. But now, the whole works, too.
I realized I kept trying to tell Lance's story. Mind you, there wouldn't have been any good way of doing so with how I had it, so really the fact that I managed to turn the entire damn story on its ear in the span of two hours is a good thing. Mmm-hm. Besides, Joey's the one who comes to change. Lance just falls in love.
Do something pretty while you can
Don't be a fool
Reading the Gospel to yourself is fine
Do something pretty while you can
Don't be afraid
Skating a pirouette on ice is cool
-Belle and Sebastian, We Rule the School
Although the theme will be David Gray's This Year's Love. My god that song is gorgeous. And hopeful! Wallow in the happy with me, if that's rhetorically possible.
It's also interesting that I no longer feel the whole thing giving me an ulcer even as I think about it.
What's funny is that all this came about because I was having a problem with reconciling Joey and JC having been friends for three years before Lance even entered either one of their lives in this reality, much less mine. I asked myself if it was absolutely necessary for JC to be Lance's roommate, and as soon as that was decidedly not the case, everything else fell into place.
I have a remarkable ability to be utterly oblivious to the existence of other options once I've made my mind up about something.
ETA: Lyrics for the former incarnation of this story that will someday be written:
Heaven's just a rumor [s]he'll dispel
as [s]he walks me through the nicest parts of hell
