Where is the love, y'all?
Nov. 17th, 2003 08:44 pmAll this "can't tell anyone what to like" and "keep your pairing squee to yourself" talk is baffling me. I wasn't around for the JuC/Bassez true believers conflict, but I understand that was long eons ago and I'd hope none of the remaining irrational and rabid fans on either side are circulating around polite society anymore and that people have since chosen to conduct themselves in the kind of egalitarian way that seems to be the spirit behind the pairings being written, the distribution of which seems ever-surprisingly fair. Woo, they grabbed hands - that does not for an official One True Pairing make. Is that what people are saying and why everyone else is up in arms? *scratches head* Joey and Chris rassled at Challenge, I've got about 2083495723 pictures of Joey and Lance in various stages of groping each other, another 2103432532 of Justin and JC making eyes, etc. Seriously, yo, one of my first remarks about the fandom was how cool it is that there are ten pairings and that all of them are being written (with extrapolatable canonic basis, too.) I thought we were past vilifying each other based on pairing preferences.
As for Bassez specifically, I was once of the mind that it was mostly a pairing wallowing in pretty and hot sex and nothing approaching practical, but that's the kind of narrow-mindedness that being widely-read demolishes. Seriously, it's all about finding good writers who love their subjects.
In other news, oh my god! This eggnog stuff is downright fantastic! I've been missing out on this for twelve years? *boggles*
McKeen said my hot button phrase during the lecture on Rolling Stone today, "disposable music," which stirred up all kinds of things so I cornered Al during his lunch hour and we had a great chat about Britney and Prince and Marvin Gaye and The Beatles and the legitimacy of pop(ular, and it's so unfortunate that people forget that that's what it actually stands for) music as a cultural influence. I'm still digesting most of it, and it might evolve into something else beyond the two-page feature on Brit's album I'm working on.

Date: November 18th, 2003 06:59 pm (UTC)Am I too easygoing to be surprised at people saying bad things about any of the pairings that are not their own? Why say negative things in the first place - it was a sweet moment! Which isn't to say people who don't like Bassez should shut it when it gets airtime, I just see it as a waste of breath. Why bother? It happened, and they'll only be inviting a good wanking onto themselves.
Personally, I'm a Joey/Lance girl to the core but not at the expense and certainly not at the disdain of all other pairings. *shrug* Maybe, like so often, it's just me.
Mmm. *gazes at your icon* JC making eyes at Justin. *takes a moment* And look ma, no drama!

Date: November 18th, 2003 08:25 pm (UTC)If people are afraid to say something, that's really their own problem. As far as wasting breath, I think that pretty much whatever you want to share, positive or negative, is not really a waste of time. It's a community. Sometimes we reinforce community by sharing and bitching about the stuff we hate and at the moment, for me, that happens to be Bassez ;)

I don't know when this ended but apparently, the resentment and prejudice toward the pairings still lingers. And Justin/JC and Bassez are both such problematic pairings anyway because they're usually written quite tackily, which doesn't help. Anyhow, that's the short of it, from what I've gathered.

Date: November 18th, 2003 09:51 pm (UTC)'nuff said.
I have no problem with any pairing written well, but I don't read fic by writers I can't abide personally and we'll leave it at that unless you want to email me.
