I was old enough to want it but younger than I wanted to be.
The university's housing department is comprised of possibly the most incompetent, useless people in all creation. The ex wants to be friends. I mostly don't. Symbiosis is the word of the day, and this ain't it. Thai food is only made better when they take me seriously about wanting it appropriately spicy. Miranda and Starbucks are a fantastic balm after a chafing week.
Fannish roundup:
- Lance looked lickably dorky in his interviews today. Still don't know what he said, but damn did that jacket do him favors in the process. Good to see him back on the publicity circuit.
- JC's liner notes are darling. Gracious, precious boy. *snogs him* I'm still so geeked about having met Adam, though. Boy keeps good company.
- Wait. We've got an album release in less than a week, almost more appearances scheduled than our TiVos can handle, snowboarding!Justin to ogle, Lance confirming (for the thousandth time, but confirming nonetheless) there will be, without question, another *NSYNC project, Joey's midnight CD release party in Orlando to anticipate, a slippery Chrissofer to watch out for, yet we're kerfuffling about:
A sloppy gossip columnist (no, not journalist, what tabloid writers practice isn't journalism, it's artistic license with some bit of information that may or may not contain an iota of truth.)
Journalism is just the facts, ma'am, checked and triple checked, and at the end of the day, yeah, we might still make mistakes even after a careful writer, two copy editors, a copy desk chief, the production staff and two night editors go through a story, but do remember things "published" online usually aren't proofed beyond their originators who submit their work either directly to the online staff or post it themselves, which cuts out the people who make their living by knowing AP style rules but fact checking as well.
The guy was obviously a biased, barely educated gossipmonger, and wouldn't be given the time of day if he set foot in a real publication's office.
Oh, right. *cracks knuckles* The album leak. Now, speaking as The Girl Who Recorded JC's Show, none of what I have to say will hold much credibility with some in the audience. After all, I exemplify the lack of self-control, surprise-phobic spoilsport most have called those of us who downloaded the songs.
For the record, nothing anybody without the power to haul me in front of the proper authorities could make me regret it.
I've said it before, but here it is one more time: It took me three days to muster the coherence to realize nothing I'll ever see/hear/experience of this album will ever be enough. I remember being almost sick with the excitement of watching JC onstage, near incoherent with joy and excitement as he belted out song after song and loving each of them more than the previous. I sincerely doubt I could've survived this album in its entirety all at once. And frankly, I'm glad I haven't had to. These songs have made me happy more times and in more ways than I can remember. For me, this album's process hasn't been about anticipation - it's been about enjoying something I fell hard in love with on first listen. For too long, there was the looming prospect that we wouldn't get to hear it - we all remember October, right? So with each new tidbit, I clung and cherished and lived in its momentum and don't regret a single step along the way now.
Other points:
- JC has given props on this count - Jive's done a really good job of keeping the lid on this album as this comes less than a week before the release date. It was bound to happen, as it inevitably does to most every album today, and release dates have been pushed up even weeks ahead because of it. So, some credit where it's due.
- As
saturn92103 noted, downloaders will download music whether it leaks before or after the release date. But these tracks were leaked on a fan forum, by a fan, for fans. People who ostensibly know JC's views on downloading music and not buying the album, people who love and support this artist they take the time to research, follow in the news, post pictures of and go to concerts to see, just to name a few things involved in being a fan. There's no better place for this to have happened, and if those fans also understand the possible ramifications of piracy, they won't make the tracks available on the download services.
- As far as savoring anticipation - the way I see it, I needed it piecemeal, otherwise I'd really be walking around catatonic for a few days until I got it all processed. There's no big reveal here, either - between the live shows (and resultant bootleg clips), the early leak, and the myriad Promosquad clips, there's very little left to be surprised about. And speaking of which...
- Some people want to be surprised. Some people want to be overwhelmed. At this point, I just want. This album has been such an interminably building tease of interviews, leaked clips, more interviews, a solo!club!tour, yet more leaked clips, an odd full song, but finally, blessed be the day and technology, it's here. Would the five days have mattered? No. But it's not like I'll be in a roomful of people who are all hearing it for the first time anyway - the Orlando gig will be like going watching a favorite movie with people who have already seen it. The enjoyment we get out of the music is personal anyway - we all have our favorites, after all - and this way, we can enjoy each other in the context of JC's music, which I'd venture he'd love to hear just as much.
- As far as being disappointed in the downloaders (who, as previously stated, are fans who ostensibly have the goal of making this album a success at heart, too, regardless) on behalf of JC? Uh, if you have time to be vicariously indignant, you've got way more expendable time and emotional energy than me. From the beginning, all JC's talked about is loving music and being so happy with the record and just wanting it out there and for people to listen to it. His only comments have been against downloading as piracy, and the way I see it, it's only piracy if you don't buy the album afterward. Also, holding out on listening to the album doesn't make anyone a better person or vice-versa. We all party differently, and it's a matter of hooking up with the right people to enjoy it.
So sad that I won't make the volleyball tourney in Miami this weekend. It's five hours though, and Miami, and no guarantees. Instead, I get to cover a step show tomorrow afternoon (my first official story assignment, whee!) and throw together a last-minute costume for a Rappers and Rock Stars party being thrown by my copy desk chief. Good, if hectic, times.
Mostly, I'm just so happy everyone from People to Rolling Stone to Entertainment Weekly is loving on JC for the album. I keep having to check myself from singing we didn't finish 'til we hit the kitchen counter or whistling along to the interlude in Something Special out loud in the office. Every song has that kind of engaging quality though. That's what I love most about this album - there's something distinctly compelling about every track.

And we need to meet up again sometime before I leave in May! :)
