Louis, Louis. Still whining, Louis.

I was much too impressionable and even more naive upon first seeing Interview with the Vampire at the age of twelve. Mostly, the movie was All About Lestat for me (thankfully, this was the first film I ever saw Tom Cruise in.)

Seeing it again now, at the age of twenty-one, I cannot at all comprehend how I didn't choke on the glut of homoeroticism. I do remember being shocked that Louis and Armand might kiss in the Louvre, remember wanting them to, fascinated as to why they would and what that would be like. Latent little slasher that I was. But Louis and Lestat. Wow. I won't lie, I took a moment or two in there.

Hahahahaha. Well, you also caught me as I was making an effort to distance myself from the VampChron fandom, disillusioning as it was to have the books topple into complete smap (and I'll admit they'd always teetered on the edge, but it was at least entertaining before) and the weirdness of the fans likewise. And it's not like it's impossible to discuss it purely as a piece of fiction for its other points :-)

But yeah, the characters are all gayer than gay things, no doubts there. Canon, in fact, for the most part. You'll also understand, however, that I started in that fandom (my first, amusingly enough) at the age of... oh, 12? 13? And therefore the hop to slash wasn't that much of a difficulty because it was easy enough for a mind unacquainted with certain particulars to hop over logistics and just say it was all symbolic *g* And contrary to popular belief, it's quite possible to write and read voluminous amounts of slash without ever bothering with such logistics. At least, if you're me. ;-)

But yes, I do so love our big gay vamps... hee. And they were so interchangeable! Lestat and Louis! Louis and Armand! Armand and Lestat! Armand and Daniel! Daniel and Louis! Heck, Daniel and Lestat in the movie. And Jessie who was, like, the little black dress of girl vamps. *muchly amused*

See, I really was such a kid in so many ways having grown up in Europe, where "alternate" lifestyles were a topic even rarer than our own everyday lives. I don't think I had a perceptual set for men finding other men attractive. Besides, Lestat liked women! He couldn't also like men!

Wow, I was such a sheltered kid. Cleared that right up, didn't we? ;)

My first "fandom" (inasmuch as I liked it on that level, not that I was involved in anything revolving around it) was probably Labyrinth. Fandomwise, definitely The X-Files, and I honestly wasn't aware of the slash aspect of it until weeeeeell into my fandom career.

They really are pretty equal opportunity when it comes to each other, aren't they? But I seriously did not at all see the Lestat/Louis in the movie, consequently spending the first forty minutes of the rewatching laughing at myself in amazement. I mean, how do you not see it? *shakes head* But then, I did actually read the first four books, and those didn't set off any bells, either. I really am uncanny about seeing what I want to see.
