That was insanity. Pure, unadulterated, 100-proof madness of the most divine kind.
The energy in the Anaheim House of Blues tonight was outrageous. That crowd was on from the second the lights went down to the last note of Some Girls. He was absolutely all-out with the dancing, virtually note-perfect on the vocals, he grinned and stuck his tongue out and posed and had so much fucking fun up there, he really made every effort to draw us into it. He touched hands; he made eye contact; he spent "a lot" of time at either end and center stage; he stuck out his tongue and grinned at us and took his every cue from what made us scream the loudest. I've never had that much fun and gotten that much from a performer before.
All Day Long I Dream About Sex was electric. Molly's intro, every.single.person's fist in the air for each repetition of the chorus, the way we almost drowned him out on school's back in session / get ready for a lesson - just, everything about this song works in a club, on a crowd that believes in what they're chanting. You could see him get more and more amped with every passing second, the crowd's intensity egging him on and keeping the energy up the entire show. He showed no signs of fatigue, his voice staying strong for the entire show. He was nowhere but right in each and every moment of the night. It was awesome.
She Got Me, as ever, was good fun. That first she was traveling through space and time, mmm, shivers. This whole song, man - we're singing about loving an alien! It just doesn't get campier and more irreverently JC than that. She might be hot! I am so in love with every particle of this man, it's embarrassing.
Song ends, cue lots and lots and... yeah, you get it. But there really was a lot of screaming. At least a minute's worth where the volume wasn't short of deafening. He eventually declared himself Rick James, then commented on being in Disney, about starting out and always ending up back there and that being good because "they always treat me good." Daaaw. Brought him Justin, didn't it? ;) He said that since he's released the record, we can hopefully do more than watch the show and sing along more (which was all the encouragement we needed to sing our fool heads of for the rest of the night), and went into "the rock & roll song."
Aaah, If You Were My Girl. No song that begins with that kind of copious pseudo-headbanging can go badly, really. Girl you got me sprung was a crowd favorite, as was ready to go, she was built for speed / not like an automatic, and the thing is, I, as a general rule, am not a fan of the singalong, but we managed to strike a great balance between participation and not on every.single.line. The band was hot all night, too, and he rocked out with the guitarist and bassist during the end of the song, which is always somehow a little odd to watch.
We were funny on One Night Stand, saying the yeah, I know with him. Also, this has been said, but it bears repeating for the sheer incongruent hilarity of it - the boy doesn't have a drop of pimp juice in him. Not even close.
"This jacket is entirely too frustrating." You know your line. So he takes the jacket off, then: "Look ma, no hair." Since he brought it up - while no luscious Chasez mane, the hair is not nearly as bad as the pictures from Miami would have us believe, and believe me, the shortened length did not keep him from running his fingers through it or tossing his head at every occasion. He went off on a bit of a tangent, then "I forgot the transition to this next song, so we're just gonna play a love song, cool."
The first crescendo of Build My World? Beautiful. We were right there with him, and the treble was pleasingly turned up, and it was a Moment. "Y'all know it?" and had us sing so bring it all to love until I find the one, and yeah, that was my first invited singalong moment, and on the ballad! Then I'll be the lonely one 'til I find the one in the second chorus, and yeah, good times (also, note to self - you're completely tone-deaf at that volume.) But this song was all about the bridge, which was exceptionally gorgeous. He turned his back to us to do his air drums on the crescendo and spun around just in time to take his cue, and wow. Wow. Best I remember it. He also had us wave our arms (did I mention how interactive this show was?) on over the it's amazing... part, and yeah, I cried a little, I did. There is no shame in how beautiful and happy being right there, right then was for everyone involved. JC, while he can make his own fun, when provided with the right level of energy, and do please forgive the bad, bad metaphor, blooms. Also, for the first time, he got off the stool, crouching at the side of the stage to sing to the crowd during certain parts, and as big a fourteen-year-old girl as this makes me, he sang so bring it all to love until I find the one right to me, arm stretched out and everything, and my god but yeah, he did, and yeah, it was very nearly my undoing right there on the spot. I think this was also the song where he stood for a moment with his arms stretched out and his face turned upward, and yeah, that's a pretty pose. I'd have to say best number of the night, hands-down.
Blowin' Me Up never gets a lukewarm reception. Especially the bridge. Yeah, we love us that bridge. This song brings me so much joy.
Aaaand the tacky rabbit hole skit. So he "takes" the "pill," "puts" it in his mouth... and draws his fingers back out in slooooow motion with this knowing, thoughtful look on his face, and barely kept from smirking as we went fucking nuts. (Erin to me: "Tell me you got that.") I did not, sadly, as I was as mesmerized as the rest of the room, but god do I hope someone did, because, yeah. Also, wow. And that's all the coherence I've got about it.
There was a lot of self love in the first minute of Come To Me. It's a very sensual number in general, but yeah, this particular House of Blues seems to bring it out in him, and there were plenty of moments of straying hands. Mmm. *takes a moment* I lie awake and masturbate remains a crowd favorite, and yeah, miming that with his hips doing everything to give you a nice, clear mental picture as to just how? *fans self* *takes another moment* There should be some JC/floor choreography to this song, there really should.
We'd known he was gonna do Let's Go Crazy since
geminigirl38 and I took an extended bathroom sojourn and heard them soundchecking (he actually sang on A.D.I.D.A.S., and by sang, I mean he belted the sucker as if he were doing it for a roomful of people then, too) but that entrance? That entrance is outrageous. He goes skidding practically to the other end of the stage before grabbing the microphone stand and busting into the song. Oh no, let's go is always a good time, and we screamed and screamed though the freestyle dancing during the instrumental break.
Dear Goodbye. Oh, this song. It's lovely, it is, broken but hopeful and he made us feel it all.
Yeah, we all know what comes next, but man, there's still very few moments in the show that approach the intensity of his busting out with The Game Is Over. Madness, the room devolved into unadulterated insanity for those thirty-odd seconds.
I'm so happy that Everything You Want exists. This one's all about the vocals for me, and so mostly, he sounded fantastic. Sorry, but I can't help shaking my ass and losing it in this song.
He finally did get to that long-denied crotch grab during Shake It and seemed right pleased with himself. Also, this song kicked. The crowd, man. We were on, we were, and this show just doesn't work at half energy, and JC brought it, he did, and we shared the sentiment like no other crowd I've been in for these shows has given. I did the old choreography for the way you hypnotize, which seemed to tickle him. Oh, and that final do it 'til you're satisfied? Sex on a mothafreakin' stick.
Right Here (By Your Side) was the sweetest I remember it, like he was sharing it with us instead of singing about it to someone we don't know. He was, pardon the pun, right.there for the entire show.
He said bitches with particular gusto tonight, and yeah, we ate it up. Also, the I wanna take you home line? Yeah, once again, right to me. He had us do the finger-circling motions for step right up and spin the wheel, which was just good fun. Also, a few more rounds of pelvis grinding have been wisely added to the choreography for the final repetition of the chorus. I am happy to report next to nothing has been cut or "sanitized" from the overall choreography. But then, it was the Anaheim show in December that went down in the books under the keyword 'raunchiest.'
Adam was manning the swag booth after the show, and we stuck around talking and resting our poor, abused feet until the crowd dissipated, so we had a chance to talk to him. He gave me that 'hey-I-know-you-but-not-quite-how' look before placing me and greeted us all. I made a comment about the underground lobbying efforts, and he said they'd discussed doing 100 Ways, had gone so far as to rehearse it, and that JC's looking to include it in his opening set for Britney, which will, and do read this sitting down, also include Plug It In. Yeah, that was a nice little tidbit. Our fates for Tampa are so sealed.
In other news, mah girls! *snogs
giddyupnow,
geminigirl38,
without_me,
coolwhipdiva* Besides being classy, beautiful ladies, y'all are by far the best line buddies ever, and that's saying quite a bit for our having been there eight hours. To
sassygurl, I was so happy you made it, extreme measures and all, and can't wait for our Vegas adventure to begin. To
dotcitameteora, who recognized me and wished me well on my France adventure, thank you. To Susan, the *NSYNC fan whose heart belongs to Wipeout, you were a darling. To Carlos, you are pretty in pink, and you should wear it more often. To the House of Blues security staff, I [heart] your eminently lax measures. Four rolls of film, of which I can comfortably fit three into my bra, and I seem to have found my picture-taking zen.

this cracks me up! but does that mean that HoB doesnt allow cameras?!

Date: April 27th, 2004 08:26 pm (UTC)Most Houses of Blues apparently do not allow cameras. The security at Anaheim was really lax, but they were being very pissy about it in Vegas and Sunset.
Hope you have a fabulous time!
