Gingerbread Lattes are back at our friendly downtown Starbucks, and though sadly it was not made at the hands of Ryan One-of-Three, it tasted no less of the season and the Great Vat of Good each and every little drop of it comes from than usual.

Have played Trivial Pursuit two nights running with [livejournal.com profile] walkingshadow "for real this time" and am not now living to regret it. Won by a single pie slice on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band last night and one of two tonight. This is noteworthy because she has teh smrt and I... get lucky with the pop culture questions. They show old movies at Maude's, too, and we sat through Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, and Young Frankenstein while there. There were a few rounds of Life as well, at which I won't ever win, but at least I'll have JC and our girls Jamie and Lindy - because at the end of the day, we're both big sopping saps - and live happily in our high-speed Internet-equipped cabin, for which we sold our beachfront dreamhouse. I teach during the year, but come summer we're frolicking together in the open fields with body paints and blank canvasses and nothing but sunshine on our skin. We make just enough to be happy and send both our girls to the out-of-state colleges of their dreams and retire on the proceeds of our art book of our naked photos, which they've generously called the great American novel.

The thing I love about DJ Shadow is his ability to make an ordinary occurrence of day - nothing dramatic, nothing epic, but just some ordinary part of some ordinary day - and set it to music that perfectly encapsulates it. John Williams does well with the dramatics. His is music in the key of real life. Wanna hear what early afternoon walking down a main-ish thoroughfare sounds like?

DJ Shadow - High Noon

I actually wrote that description of the song before looking at its title.

Rec! In the Turning by [livejournal.com profile] casirafics - I don't know where I had occasion to come across a rec for this fic, but thank you to whomever pointed the way. Hermione/Remus, and I wish that wouldn't put so many people off because it's beautiful and genius in so many little ways, it's got me by the throat and wanting to hand over any credentials I might possess that say I can write. It's one of Those stories.

Whoot! Scissor Sisters in Orlando! My ticket is as good as bought and my time from work will be begged off in whatever creative way I have to, and damn it all that it's a school night but I'm going. The House of Blues! Besides the crappy line management, I've nothing but profound love in my heart for the venue. And these boys. Oh, boys. Sadly, the only sample of their work I possess is their cover of Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out, but whether you know the original or not, it should give you a good feel for what they're about. *lives for classical-instrument-heavy rock*

The Darkness have allegedly sold so many band logo-emblazoned thongs, their most popular item of merchandise, they claim they can finance their next LP on those proceeds alone. Bwah!

I risked life, limb, and much pain by foot-on-thumbtack to string Christmas lights around the periphery of my room a few weeks ago. I am now a very, very glad cookie I did just that. Ambient lighting at its cheeriest.

Oh, JC. JC. What am I to do with you? That beard and frilly lapeled jacket together is just darling, and as much as I adore the curls, the new short hair is working for you in a mighty big way. Rock on.

Quotes of the Day:

"I've never met her, but I think she's very beautiful and is a brilliant performer. She can dance her ass off. ... She never said she wanted to be Whitney Houston. She's not trying to be Aretha. She's trying to be Britney. She's great at what she does."
- Joss Stone

"I had a dream once that Remus and Sirius decided to be in a porn movie called "Orgy of the Phoenix." ... It was very amusing while it lasted. Harry kept on yelling at Sirius and Remus that they couldn't be porn stars, and Sirius replied, "But I'm really, really good at it." Remus want to know if werewolf porn was hot because filming was going to begin the night of the full moon. Sometimes I fear myself."

"My *God*. Lex, Lex, Lex...evil can only be allowed so much latitude. When it offends the eyes...well."

I have not, no, because the accompanying writeup was never completed. I didn't get to use it for a class project, as I'd hoped, which would've sped the process along considerably. But I'm working on them and do promise to get them posted once a less stressful weekend comes along. Being a senior has its sucktastic points. So, yes, apologies, but they're coming.
