My KINGDOM for a Harry/Snape story where neither of them has been sexually abused/assaulted. We're talking everything and the queen's booty, people. *long-suffering sigh*
I absolutely loved the Potter books, but have not been sucked into the fic yet. I'm actually nervous to read anything. I equate this fear with reading a death fic that doesn't have a disclaimer. It's just too emotionally taxing.
Well, I've come across a couple of good things which will one of these days get compiled into a list of recommendations, but as it stands, HP fandom is such a minefield, you better get in good with a person you trust absolutely to rec good fic, and base it on their track record elsewhere because all good sensibility seems to go flying out the window in that fandom. Maybe I've just been spoiled with the oogobs of amazing fic in popslash, but I don't think so - I just think the overwhelming majority of what's out there in HP sucks. Not only does it suck, it's repetitive, largely written by the books' target audience, and gratuitously abusive to its characters. And yet for some ungodly reason, here I am, along with a long and illustrious list of others who have been sucked in. There's good in there. I promise. Just be very, very cautious where you tread. After all, this fandom has Remus Lupin, and there's really no wrong there. *g*
Hey, I think you'd posted a link Harry fic once, called Saving Harry? I think that was the name - do you have the link to it, still? It seems I've lost it!
I know a fic called Stealing Harry, where Remus and Sirius take Harry from the Dursleys when he's about eight and raise him on their own; it's by copperbadge, and it's in many parts at his website here.
For reals! I mean, why? WHY? For the love of Merlin, what is the point of this exercise? It's like with the Remus/Harry fics where the only way to get them together is to give Harry nightmares so he'll come crawling into bed with Remus, ergo sex. Uh, no. Problem with this fandom is that it's mostly written by the target audience of the books, but this is neither the time nor place to explore the implications of the content of a lot of the fic and the age of its authors. I just, I don't get it, and it's such an easy in for plot devices and giving characters issues the authors can Mary Sue themselves into, yadayadayada. Why aren't you reccing me good HP fic, hm? You seem to share my aversion to the issues I've mentioned.
Man, all my recs are straight from saturn92103. She's got discerning taste, man! I'm trying to poke around and find some of my own volition, but no dice so far. Only scarred Harry (no pun intended) or a Snape who's been pining away for 7 years for Harry and finally has a chance after graduation. God, I hate that storyline.
I've already addressed this bit of cheekiness with you, but for good measure: *sticks out tongue* Snape is teh hawt (next to Remus, of course) and the fact that he's tragically misrepresented in fic does not in any way detract from the fact that he and Harry are so profoundly (if deeply fucked-uppedly) MFEO in their own way that I will continue to venture forth in the mere hope of fic that will finally get it right.

Date: November 24th, 2004 01:05 am (UTC)Okay, I'll try a couple. Maybe something angsty or terribly gut wrenching, without death, to throw me into the fire. :)
I'm not sure what pairing I'll like so maybe some Harry/Snape or Harry/Draco or something with Lupin. heh~

For Harry/Snape try these:
Scratch
Definition
A Choriambic Progression
Crucius
I could go on and on. Read them all. ;)
Harry/Draco:
Start with "Commencement."
Snape/Lupin:
The Way of the World is long but I love it. Also "Skin Deep."
In Misc. pairings, read "Care of Magical Creatures."
I could go on and on.
