The problem with only updating on days when the earth isn't either keeling on its axis or I'm so high on life that coming down involves a hangover is that I can't properly convey how refreshing a brief spate of the mundane can be.

Spent Sunday afternoon largely on the living room sofa, casually assigning leftover Homecoming stories over Stargate: Atlantis. You know, as a conversation with Miranda later determined, taping what's haphazardly aired by the Sci-Fi Channel is probably not the best method of getting into this show, but at the moment, the plots largely consist of let's get John Sheppard into trouble and send his friends to the rescue. And by the way, the doctor and bosslady are ass-over-teakettle in love with him, but he's too busy being only barely social/civil for some reason. He was pitched to me as this smart, complex character, but as I've seen, he's off-puttingly sarcastic and headstrong to the point of endangering his friends.

Workwise, my second solo budget meeting was equally disastrous to the first. It's a lot of bloody hard work to look like you know what you're doing in there, mostly thanks to the crazy addition. But there was a good framework for a paper, complete with a rebudget before Mike returned from the wilds of South Florida. Also, Features Editor Neil returned from a weekend-long Irish wedding with a sexy new hangover-cold voice, and thus my inner 14-year-old was appeased for the night.

Today saw the unveiling of the That Cartoon-centric Gainesville Sun expose that Foley declined to comment about last week before the writers, which turned out to be my former jilted Courts reporter, Megan, and our most recent can't-cut-it-as-a-beat-reporter Crystal and everyone's favorite admin-turned-editor Janine Young-Sikes, got in touch with us for comment first. But journalism ethics aside, it wasn't a bad piece. I still disagree with most people and cannot believe they didn't bother to talk to a media lawyer or ethics committee about this, just people with various mediations of their political correctness-conditioned positions. We're not in the business of preserving delicate sensibilities here at the Alligator Opinions section or sidestepping issues because of the potential for controversy. Can we tell I've got nothing but bitterness left for the topic? Maybe it's a good thing Hannity & Colmes didn't end up calling back.

In any event, I took in a speech by the French Ambassador to the United States Jean-David Levitte this afternoon, in which I held my own against one of the few credible Sun reporters. More importantly, my piece not only had a read-on lead but made the dense politics he covered accessible to whoever happened to stumble into the story. Because how many can claim foreign politics as her forte? Not I, before the extensive education I learned myself by deadline courtesy of Google. [lays umpteenth sacrifice at altar]

Lastly, but if anything mostly, I would like to thank a very special member of the audience. I received [livejournal.com profile] walkingshadow's care/birthday package tonight that included, among a very many other cherished things, the entirety of the Cowboy Bebop series soundtrack, and man, I haven't wanted it to be freshman year of college again for a very long time, but last night, it was all I could do not to drive home and squeeze the ever-loving stuffing out of her.

God, yes, thank you. Not that I don't love him and all, but allow me to steal a page from the people who go on and on and ON about what an off-putting diva bitch Rodney is, and they like him like that omg, unlike the fluffybunnies who want to turn him into a woobie, or whatever ... but who never seem to notice what fanon's doing to John, who is more than a match for Rodney McKay, whether that be in a slashy sense or not. And don't even get me started on how Sheppard has zero business being the guy in charge, mainly because of his inability to see the big picture and his recklessness and the way that puts other people in danger.

Wow. I think you touched a nerve. :g:

And see, I like him too, but mostly superficially because he's terribly pretty in the way I love, and his sense of humor isn't a lost cause... But largely, he seems like he's not comfortable in his world, like he was put into a situation not entirely of his own volition with people he doesn't quite connect with and is still playing by someone else's rules. Does that sound like anything coherent?

Also, Rodney? A diva? Wow, now I'm beginning to worry I don't watch the same show as fandom at all.

And don't even get me started on how Sheppard has zero business being the guy in charge

Very much yes. It's like he's an idol of a fanclub rather than a proven strategist and leader.
