so out of not much more particular a desire than wanting to become an opening weekend box office statistic, i drove 45 minutes across town to Las Olas Riverfront to see Spiderman with Jack, who ended up being more of a surrogate mockery receptacle than he bargained for.

mild hysteria-inducingly enough at points, i had to shake myself and re-evaluate my answer to the question of 'is this the Spiderman or Superman story i'm watching here?' periodically throught the movie. seriously though: orphaned, moping superhero (supposedly) mired in hopeless love for a beautiful (if deeply annoying) girl, yet in the end, just as he stands to gain everything he's wanted, deciding that it is in fact the son of their rich nemesis who comes first in his life. i couldn't make this stuff up, folks. so there was barely stifled laughter where there should've been sniffles and eye-rolling where 'oohs' and 'aahs' were in order. except when it came to the special effects - the CGI candy (haHA!) alone was well-worth the price of admission. Spiderman's costume made for some eerily true-to-form (both kinds, happily) realization, not to mention all the swinging from buildings and crawling on walls, Hobgoblin's glider, and the Spider!Sense timing of that final punch before Flash got his ass kicked for his trouble. Jonah-Jameson and Willem Dafoe as Hobgoblin also turned in fabulous performances - there was one scene in particular where he and Spiderman faced off inside a burning building, fire all around, rafters falling through the floor, that looked disconcertingly real. and that was really the thing about the whole movie - the producers managed to keep the comic book feel while successfully translating the medium to real life. a good, if inappropriately amused time, was had by all.
