Michael Shanks. Yeah, other things happened, but really, Michael Shanks.

Morning I hear everyone in Vancouver was as shocked as me to wake up to sunlight.

After last night's drinks, I could not peel myself out of bed before 8:30, which meant I wasn't ready and downtown until a little after 10 a.m. and without directions to the screening, so I didn't make A Dog's Breakfast. However, I did meander around Dr. Sun Yun Phat park, which my Vancouver guidebook couldn't stop raving about, skipping across a pond on stepping stones and communing with nature while surrounded by skyscrapers, a freeway and the SkyTrain. I then hit up Cafe Artigiano, where the barista drew a maple leaf in the foam on my caffe latte, which was exquisite and completely shamed any other coffee I've ever drunk.

Photo Op Michael Shanks, Michael Shanks, Michael Shanks. Do I start with the messy coif (that apparently took four actual executive decisions)? The leather jacket? The smile? The handshake? The fact that I embarrassed myself hideously not three seconds in?

Yeah, I did. He was greeting everyone with a handshake and "How are you?" Now, I had time to think about what I'd say in line, and even once I knew what he was going to say, but when I stepped up and took his hand and met his eyes, what I managed was, "I'm fantastic now." Yeah. God. My brain did not get a consult on that one - it was one of those silly gut-honest things you say when your higher faculties betray you. Michael, however, was nothing short of absolutely sporting, with a chuckle and a squeeze to the shoulder before we mugged for the camera.

Hey, at least we're both pretty. Proof of that coming soon.

Shanks on stage He surprised me, really. I had the impression he was leery of fans and conventions were really outside his comfort zone, but he seemed completely at ease, even when the questions got awkward. Great sarcastic sense of humor, and his impression of Vala fawning over Sheppard across the Atlantis conference table, complete with pinky in his mouth, was adorably spot-on, and all told he really does seem to love Daniel. He sounded genuinely concerned when we told him his office had been struck and wasn't part of the set tour. Also, he's beautiful. And smart. And thinks Daniel's karaoke song of choice would be Killing Me Softly (though my knee-jerk reaction was Walk Like an Egyptian, which he kind of frowned at and dismissed.) But his answer works in ways he likely didn't intend and in their own separate ways it describes all of SG1. Although he probably only meant it as a follow-up to the previous question of an official tally on how many times Daniel has died. To wit: So many that no one at the SGC takes his disappearance as anything to worry about anymore.

And his own karaoke song, when "piss drunk" with Chris Judge, is Sweet Child of Mine. <3<3<3

Somewhere in there, Dan Shea talked about RDA hating that he stuck his pinky out when doubling for him on the P-90, nearly setting Amanda Tapping on fire in a very early episode, an elaborate and abortive trust exercise involving one of the con volunteers falling off a chair, and taking his shirt off with Peter DeLuise. He was spectacularly funny, always. And Torri Higginson and Rachel double-teamed the final panel, ending it on a lovely song.

Later that night, as I was going downstairs to blab to you all about it, the elevator stopped on the third floor, where all the panels and such took place, and opened on Torri and Sedge. They were still waiting on someone, but Sedge wandered in and said hello, then back to Torri. Despite three Challenge for the Children events, the elevator encounter was only something I'd heard about wistfully from others. Seemingly, that's just fine, as all I managed was to scratch Sedge's back.

All of your reports have been so fun to read, and yet all I can come up with is Mmmmmmmm Shanks.

From what I heard, early on he was scared to death of the conventions and refused to go to them. But once Chris and Amanda had been to a couple and told him how fun they were, he gave it a shot and has been doing them ever since. He has a great perspective on the fandom and knows how to stop someone cold if they go into that weird place with their question, and do so with humor and charm. He should just do PAs the rest of his life, he's so good at them.

Can't wait to see the pic! I'm sure you both look gorgeous!

I had an incredible time, though I just realized you weren't on the filter for the money shot of the weekend. On the ramp! We got to walk up and through the gate if we wanted!

But yes, Re: Michael Shanks. Being as I am completely ass-over-teakettle in love with Daniel, the added bonus of meeting the savvy, witty man behind him has kind of melted my brain. So effin' pretty.

I'm so excited for you! It's been great reading about the fun you're having; I'm just sorry I couldn't go, too.

It was such a fantastic weekend. I mean, the sets alone, but the panels were terrific and nobody got really embarrassing with the questions, and it was a great group of people out to have a lot of fun. If I can afford (anything ever again after this weekend, good GAWD) it next year, we should all do it.

It sounds like you are having an incredible time! I'm loving reading the reports, even though I have only the vaguest idea who these people are.

I think you'd love Michael Shanks. In the way that ALL heterosexual women love Michael Shanks. He's going to have a recurring role on 24 soon, if that works?

I haven't watched the whole thing, but here is a YouTube video of an interview he did after what I assume was either a panel or photo op. He's eating and still manages to be outrageously pretty.

He's so BEAUTIFUL, J. And I'm not even at the part where he winked at me. I talk to people for a living, and yet, the most intelligent thing I managed around him was not blushing to my toes.
