One of those embarrassing summer flu things had the decency to remain at bay for my New York journey, but hit full-on as soon as I stepped off the plane in Orlando. Ever since, I've been achey and coughy and blowing my nose every five minutes.

Despite all that, I returned to work yesterday, and all seemed well for a relatively effortless night until a story fell into my lap at 4:30. This was the result.

Now, other news organizations knew about the story, even airing interviews with the restaurant staff. But I was the only one to get an interview with the mother. She was amazing, and I tried so hard to keep her completely anonymous, not just because that's PRECISELY why she made her choice, but because she's trying to shield her secret still. But my crime reporter partner just called about the restaurant being surrounded by television news crews, everyone scrambling to get an interview with her, and our partner cable news station wanting me on at 3 p.m.

Um, yeah. I can't exactly decline, so anyone got any recommendations for incredible cold medicine to dry up my sinuses for about three minutes?

Afrin. Yeah, nasal spray is kinda gross, but it's the only way I've survived exams when I've had colds. Works really well for about 6 hours and you almost feel back to normal.

Turns out intense stage fright shuts down pretty much all my bodily functions that do not directly relate to thinking. But I shall file this away for later!
