Eep, If I understand the article correctly.
A 3 bedroom apartment in 2006 had a Dh127,000 rent (€ 20271.35 / $ 29506.98). I presume that is annual, but still a bit steep.
Also with a 15% yearly legal cap, that would still mean prices are 32.25% higher by now (Dh 167957.50 / € 26808.86 / $ 39022,98)

Please tell me this is an annual rent price...

Yes, this is annual rent, and your calculation is largely correct (the one person in a three-bedroom apartment at the office I know of is paying Dh160,000). Here is a more recent story (I was going to edit the entry, but you were too fast!) Brandon and I, needless to say, will be sharing a one-bedroom apartment not entirely comfortably on our combined salaries, which went up by about two-thirds from our jobs in the States. Yeah, it's not a good situation. God knows where the migrant laborers live.

With prices like these, isn't it more economic to buy an apartment? Rent prices will quickly overtake the mortgage and when you leave you can sell the place and retire. :/

It would be, if we could. Expats can't buy property in Abu Dhabi (they can in Dubai) from what I understand, though someone's gotta be buying all those beachfront condos.
