I always assumed South Park's Casa Bonita, in which Cartman stages the apocalypse so Kyle will invite him to a birthday dinner at the eponymous restaurant, was really Disney's Mexico in the World Showcase. Today, I found out it's a REAL PLACE.

Casa Bonita ("the funnest AND tastiest place to eat in Denver for nearly thirty years")

They have cliff divers (who juggle flaming torches!) A Black Bart attraction! Winding caverns! Sopapillas with every order! And, randomly, a show involving a man in a gorilla costume. I would fake a meteor/zombies scenario to go there, too.

That's fabulous! I always thought it was some made up place but knowing that it is real makes that episode so much more hysterically funny. Thanks for the info!

I love that episode so much, and it's totally better knowing Cartman had this place in mind. You almost can't blame him...

Totally real. When my friend first showed it to me, she was like, the food is horrible, except the sopapillas. Don't ever go there, she said. But the episode makes it so alluring!

I mean, when I'm in Denver. Which is only when I visit her.

It looks like so much FUN! I wouldn't even care about the food, the atmosphere must be insane.

LOL! that's great! Looking at their web site, the food does look awful but the place looks so silly and fun. Yeah, I bet kids love going there. :)

I am such a sucker for themed restaurants, this place would play to my "Ooh, shiny!" button hardcore. I'd probably forget to eat at all!

My sister used to live in Colorado Springs----I've been to Casa Bonita twice. The food sucks, but the "ambience" is awesome;) It's in the corner of a strip mall, and you'd never EVER guess that all that madness is just inside. The restaurant covers about 3 stories underground---there's even an abandoned mine. It's sort of like Fisherman's Wharf---you have to go just to say you've been.

Oh, this information will make my hubby's day! He loves underground/hidden buildings, and to know there is this sprawling funhouse beneath an otherwise ordinary-looking strip mall is kind of every Floridian's dream. We have to go now.
