Turns out I tax the rich and bad habits, think people should have saved enough while working so they don't need pension funds, give benefits to legal immigrants but kick out illegal ones, believe in nursing homes over in-home care when the state is footing the bill, and do not, under any circumstances, cut health and rehabilitation programs. I can live with these facts.

Recent fortunes aside, I don't work in a particularly lucrative industry, and thus do not live the way that I could if my entire paycheck were going toward the good life, instead of a savings account. There's no prospect of my company essentially keeping me on the payroll after I leave - therefore, I live within my means and then some so that when I'm 80 I don't have to still be working to stay in my home. Maybe it's because my parents never belonged to a union or an industry known for pensions, but I've never understood the practice. Pay people enough to save, and make them take responsibility for it.

Oh, I hear you about living within your means. But for many people, and I mean millions, living within their means - paying the rent, eating, paying the bills - leaves them with zero money left over. Entire sections of our workforce are wildly underpaid, and there just isn't money left over at the end of the month. One emergency can wipe them out. One day where the car breaks down and they have no other way to get to work (because public transportation isn't everywhere), or they're in a car accident, or the kid breaks her leg playing outside, and they're done.

Pay people enough to save, yes. But that isn't the reality.
