picking up some slack

After four days of hacking up my lungs, breathing through my mouth, huddling in my Atlantis sweatshirt and moaning pitifully, the death flu has been vanquished. You know, it wouldn't have been nearly as bad, but as our waiter at Smoky Bones and I commiserated, who gets the flu in the middle of JULY? Lame.

No fewer than three people have called/e-mailed to tell me about Lance's big coming out party, which probably was only news to me as fandom is generally at least three days ahead of The Associated Press.

Why yes, that scene in the flashback Gilmore Girls episode with 16-year-old Lorelai sitting alone in the hospital emergency room waiting to be admitted because she was in labor with Rory listening to 99 Luftballons was the saddest thing I've seen in forever.

Booked eight-day vacation to Atlanta. Ostensibly for DragonCon, more importantly for heady amounts of caffeine and sleep deficit in the company of [livejournal.com profile] walkingshadow and our Haaahvard friend. [GLEE]

My electronic family welcomed a PlayStation 2 with Guitar Hero last night. Mother is doing joyfully, even if her fingers aren't.

I missed Rodney's line about downloading porn in Misbegotten, which would have QUADRPLAGESATED my enjoyment. Though the rest of you are doing a good job of working me over, too.

Brandon is sitting across from me at the dining room table, eating cereal with one hand while reading my British copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the other. It's like we've skipped past all the stupid stuff that usually trips up relationships and went straight to old married couple.

DRAGONCON!!! Woooooooo. It's always a zoo, but I'll be there, House of Boys in tow.

The only other time I went was in 2002, and it's by far the most fun I've ever had at a convention. Sitting next to anime characters on the subway! Running from panel to panel! Ordering ice cream in line with Klingons! Such crazy fun. I'd love to run into you, mais oui. It may take some clever coordination and prying me away from James Callis, but yes. :)

The only place I know I'll be for sure is the Saturday morning parade, because I am not strong enough to resist the lure of 100+ stormtroopers walking down Peachtree Street. If the past few years are any indication, I'll be hanging about the YA lit track a lot, but other than that, I just mostly roll with it. But, as you say, YES, we shall cleverly coordinate and pry as necessary. =)

So, to put my immense dorkitude in perspective, I've gone through the list of attendees and created three categories of whom I NEED to see, want to see, and would see if someone else wanted to. o_O There's science and technology and actors and writing, so mostly I'm going to get a great workout running up and down stairwells and will likely be in your vicinity at some juncture. But the parade sounds pretty unmissable - any spots you advise staking out? The year I went, the convention was split between two hotels, but I haven't made it as far as checking out the arrangements for this year, only that it seems even BIGGER.

I haven't done my own similar analysis yet (sisters in dorkitude, REPRESENT) but in glancing at things, it looks like panels, etc, are set up in the Hyatt and the Marriott, with the all of the gaming and registration going on at the Hilton. For the parade, we usually hang out right by the Hard Rock, not because of any special stellar viewing potential, but rather because it's easier for everyone to find it, thus increasing the chances of actually finding the people we're trying to link up with. =)

Are you staying downtown or are you crashing with friends and riding in on the subway?

Good gods, THREE hotels?

The Hard Rock sounds like a smart location - it's where I retreated to replenish and take myself down a notch from the craziness, so I know it well.

And I'm actually crashing with [livejournal.com profile] walkingshadow and hers. They live... somewhere near the city, suburbs I think. But she works in a downtown building, so she's got parking from what I understand to be very close to the hotels. But the subways! I have a thing for sketch underground transit, apparently.

Oh. Atlanta. I was thinking about DragonCon while driving home from there last weekend. The idea of going seems insane for me, but still, the yearning!

[identity profile] gjstruthseeker.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You're all of, what, eight hours' drive away? De nada, darling! Come play with us!

[identity profile] zeplum.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Six! With traffic!

I will come play if I can, promise.

*hugs*

I'll be there for the whole weekend, so any day you can manage would be fantastic.

Also, I totally lost it when the hive Queen went after your boy. Lorne! Thank goodness Gero realizes our unhealthy attachments to the secondary characters.
