Grievous oversight: Thanks to
without_me and
wovenindelibly for the virtual snowflakes - they reminded me of the people I love here. Need to get out to see you ladies again sometime.
A little catch-up, and a little working ahead in the book, as I'll be on a mountain this weekend on the UAE/Oman border celebrating my second wedding anniversary. This is our second try at it, since on the actual date in mid-December we were rained out. In the desert! We're thinking of it as a good omen.
Day 7: A photo that makes you happy
Kittens' first Christmas:

I don't believe you've met our monochrome family, Sam (solid gray, went straight for the ribbons) and Barry (prefers tissue paper). Sam comes by way of a very expensive pet store in town - I know, but Brandon has allergies, and I have cat hair issues, and she's practically hypoallergenic and non-shed, which was a lovely way to ramp me up to the idea of cats, which I've resisted all my life.
And then there is Barry, who I literally scooped off the mean streets of Abu Dhabi as a skinny stray and has turned out to be the sweetest animal I've ever met. He also was apparently raised by dogs, flopping onto his back to have his belly rubbed, playing fetch and doing his best kitty approximation of barking.
Day 8: A photo that makes you angry/sad

There are dozens of these small wooden boats, called abras, that make the short trek across Dubai Creek ever 15 minutes. The driver sits in the middle, with the customers sitting along either side on a raised wooden bench. The fare is Dh1 (about 25 cents) and it's an exhilarating ride, with the wind in your face, sitting next to people from all walks of life, watching a bit nervously as the boats jockey and bump into each other to get to the dock.
But the Dubai Tourism Authority is planning to phase them out in favor of bigger, closed, air-conditioned boats that have no charm at all and would likely take twice as long to make the trip. This city needs to learn that not all of its culture belongs in a museum.
Day 9: A photo you took

Taking candid photos of people in costume is my absolutely favorite thing to do at DragonCon. More than panels, though possibly not more than bumping into Michael Shanks on an elevator, if I can throw that out there into the universe to set in motion? If not, I'll take more opportunities to catch Gandalf on his cellphone.
Day 10: A photo of you taken over 10 year ago I'm on the wrong side of the world for this one - all my photos are in albums in storage, or with my marginally computer-literate mom. But basically, 10 years ago I was 17 (OMG rly?) in the 10th grade, just settling into my first real relationship, which would last for more than a year, defying the closed campus rule to eat lunch at a pizza place across the street, getting into Nine Inch Nails and taking my first Psychology class. I recommend the 101 level to everyone - it's so useful for making just a little more sense of the world. Mere exposure effect explains to much, and knowing about the bystander effect could save a life someday.
Day 11: A photo of you taken recently

At the F1 qualifying race in Abu Dhabi's brand new Yas Marina Circuit. The cars are so much louder than you think, and sound nothing so much like angry bees.
