Today did a complete one-eighty on my mood. Somewhere past the two-day long panic attack about classes (shouldn't finally having even a vague notion of what one wants to do with one's life make said process easier?), I had my first MMC2100 lecture with graffiti-happy Jimmy and adorably nutty Professor Dodd, a Vanilla Frappucino, and met a bunch of very cool new people at my first LiveJournal MeetUp. Downtown Gainesville was where the party was at tonight, and did we ever have a time of it. Moment of the evening? "Hi, my name is Jules and I write gay porn." Except I said it kinda loud. Right there on the sidewalk in front of Starbucks, smack in the middle of a downtown in the American South. We like it here on the edge, thanks.

There is to be free food and spirits to go with the big screen presentation of the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards in Murphree Commons this Thursday night. After which I hop a Greyhound for Atlanta for the four-day dorkstravaganza known as DragonCon. No classes on Friday plus Labor Day equals guilt-free indulgence in the geeker side of me.

I am addicted to fake celebrity livejournals. Yeah, that's about the short and sad of it. Not that there was ever any doubt, but the boyband kids do absolutely nothing but dance and fuck. It's like all the world's a stage and there's really no good reason to do anything but suggestive performance art aside from the already egregious amounts of sex you're clocking.

You should've seen us last night though, shopping for sharp kitchen utensils and writing implements but detoured by the Beach Boys-singing cookie jars in WalMart. Oh man. It's hard for the body to stay depressed when it's most immediate issue becomes oxygen deprivation. No matter what they tell you kids, laugh therapy works. Although it having been about midnight, it is entirely possible that we were merely in dire need of sleep and the amusement factor wouldn've been much lower in the light of lucid day.

Nah. Serenading cookie jars? Come on. You know you've got Surfin' Safari in your head too.

Ah oh! Hi! You're going to DragonCon?! Fiend! I love DragonCon. I've gone four times, but I haven't gone in two years. I really wanna go, but hate long drives and couldn't justify spending the cash on air fare. I never considered taking a bus. Weird. I'm so jealous. And there are people and friends there I wanted to see. *Sigh* Take me with you.

I've never been before. A friend mentioned that she was running one of the Smallville panels and sent a link to the website. I didn't even realize it was this weekend until a friend in Atlanta told me they thought of me when they heard about it. Timothy Zahn! Intelligent-seeming BTVS discussion! X-Files reminiscing! Smallville, Smallville, Smallville! I am in paroxisms of ecstacy. Yes, I'm going for all four days, my lodging taken care of so it's just a matter of sucking up the $85 for bus fare and $75 for admission. Yikes. However, I've done less with more. Chicago. One day. Two words: Michael Rosenbaum. Yeah, I may not look it, but within dwells a fangirl the likes of whose passionate devotion could almost be called a sickness.

Almost. I'm still free-roaming, aren't I?

That's right, rub it in. Grrr. Make sure to see Voltaire perform. Do not miss him. I'm sad. You're going to have such fun!

Come along! It's Greyhound, there are seats, and traveling alone on shady buses at all hours of the night isn't my style anyway.

What am I, your ho? I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to mean. I'd love to go! But where would I stay? Hotels are usually booked to the brim around DragonCon time. I figure you're staying with friends and if I hopped along that would just be weird for everyone concerned. But it is enticing...

Hm. You'd mentioned you'd be meeting up with people, I assumed that they were from the area, which, you know, was just plain silly considering that this is the biggest sci-fi convention of the year. I'm already crowding and inconveniencing dorm dwellers, so yeah, sorry that I can't be of help there.

::hopeful look:: Would you still be willing to give a first-time attendee some tips as far as when to get to panels and such?

Typically, if there's something you really want to see, and you think it might be crowded, it probably will be. So for some thing's I'd suggest getting there at least fifteen minutes early or more. Often more if you want a good seat. Hmm, I'm not sure which panels to suggest, since they change from year to year. I think Ted Raimi will be there, and he's always funny, so see him. Don't miss the costume contest. It's on Sunday night. The Dawn look-a-like contest is an excellent place to see some sexy dames, if you're into that. Last time I was there I had a lot of fun at the drum circle. I think I did a chest-baring dance for about eight hours. And like I said before, definitely don't miss Voltaire. I'm not sure if he's performing this year, but if he is, see him.

How big are the panels? I just have no idea at all what to expect. Fifteen minutes doesn't sound like much time, but then again there are a lot of things going on, so it sounds about right (not to question you - I've just had both luck and lots of not as far as judging wait time).

LOL, contrary to Slash writer statistics, I am not in fact a lesbian. I'm in that freak minority of straight girls. Thanks for the heads up though.

Voltaire is indeed performing. Note made.

Thanks for the tips!

Panels vary in size. So I guess get there whenever you feel like it. And good, that means there's more sexy dames for me!
