So now that I'm hacking my lungs up and feeling like death grilled over an open flame, does anyone have suggestions beyond:

-tea with lemon and honey
-lots of fluids in general (water, orange juice)
-vitamins

Non-prescription medicine would be nice, too, but I don't even ever take over-the-counter stuff. Recommendations between Sudafed, Robitussin, etc.?

*sniffle* Thanks in advance.

Thanks, hon. Actually, sleeping hasn't been a problem *knocks on wood* it's just the waking up process this morning that scared me. I'm going to positively get loopy on decongestants. Yes, that sounds wise.

Robitussin is a good friend of mine when I'm sick.

But just as an FYI, if you're not used to drinking orange juice and fruit juices, they can do more harm than good when you're sick; they can cause digestive problems if you suddenly switch from almost never drinking them, to a drinking them a lot. You don't really want to deal with, um, rapid evacuation issues, on top of the rest.

Really? That's very interesting. But having lived in Florida for the past 12 years, not drinking orange juice would be almost tantamount to being chronically dehydrated. Or just weird. *g* But thanks for the tip.

You can eat whole oranges and still be fulfilling your Florida duty (assuming they're not from California), and you'd be doing better for yourself nutritionally, anyway. But see The Mayo Clinic for info on dehydration, fluid intake when sick, etc.

I subsist on the Sudafed-Tylenol cocktail when sickness comes 'round.

Whole oranges? *euw* Too tart and pulpy for my tastes.

Mmm, Tylenol. I really do underestimate the stuff. That was some seriously choice relief this morning. I won't soon forget the good it's done for me.

I'll put on my Mom-hat, and ask if the cough is the 'holy shit, I can't control this' kind of a cough (in which case, try Robitussin CF) or if it's the 'I am trying to see how much of my lungs I can expel' kind (then go for the Robitussin DM.) Also, the Target/Kroger/Wal-Mart brands are pretty much just as effective and cost about a third less than Robitussin itself.

And real-live chicken soup (preferably not from a can--send somebody to a restaurant/deli?) is always a good thing.

Robitussin DM it is. Man, I didn't even know about distinguishing between coughs.

Mmm, chicken soup. I almost forgot. I have to venture out for last-minute trip things anyway, so I'll pick some up. Thank you!

Aleive Cold. It's the best thing I have ever used.

*scribbles note* Thanks, hon. And no, this is definitely not the time to have a cold, not when I'm facing waiting hours in the windy cold and snowstorms. Shall have this under control by tomorrow, yes I shall.

Dayquil gel tabs to get you through the day, and Nyquil gel tabs at night. AND! There's this stuff that you add to hot water and it's fabulous, though it tastes like boiled shoe leather...I think it's by Alka Seltzer. *Wonderful* stuff. There's also TheraFlu, which is another hot nighttime drink concoction. Good, good stuff.

Ooh, yes, TheraFlu. Completely forgot about that, my mom made it for me when I had a sore throat. Good tips, thank you!

I know i am strange, but I found that Dayquil made me feel worse (I am in the middle of a sinus infection, and now on real meds, woo hoo!) Just whatever you take make sure to drink LOTS of water

Yes, water. Definitely keeping hydrated, that's a big one. It got close earlier today with a fever and being out and about, but a bottle of water later I was worlds better. I just don't know how to be sick. *g*
